Cheez-it Perimeter

Today we discussed perimeter. We used cheez-its to practice finding the perimeter of shapes we made. What a tasty way to learn perimeter.

Quantitive and Qualitative Data

Today we discussed the difference between quantitive and qualitative data. We used oreo and chocolate chip cookies to learn the difference between the two types of data. We measured our cookies using scales and measured the height and length of the cookies. . We also described the physical characteristic of our cookies. We alos had to sample our cookies to use for our data. We had a tasty lesson in science today.

Marshmallow 3 D shapes

Today we reviewed 3 D shapes and their number of faces, vertices, and edges. We used marshmallows and toothpicks to construct each 3 D shape. We then completed our organizer naming the number of faces, vertices, and edges.

Halloween Candy Experiment

On Monday we conducted experiments using some of our Halloween candy. We discussed density and buoyancy. We then tested each candy to see which ones would float and which would sink. We discovered that 3 Musketeers and Whoopers float.

Geometric Shapes

Today we learned about 3 D shapes. We discussed what vertices, edges and faces are. We watched a video on 3 D shapes. We also made a chart in our math notebook to help us remember the different shapes and the number of faces, edges and vertices each has.

Mixture or Solution

Today we conducted an experiment with Kool Aid to see if we had a mixture or a solution. We watched a quick video on mixtures and solutions. We then had a treat of Kool aid.

Multiplication

Today we reviewed two digit by one digit multiplication. We played a card game to help us review. One player drew two cards and put them side by side. Then the student drew one more card to multiple by.

Factor Game

Today we reviewed factors. We played The Factor Game. One student turns over the first card. Another students sets the timer for 1 minute. Students then list all of the factors for the number on the card. Each student gets a point for a correct factor. If a students lists an incorrect factor they receive 0 points. The students played 7 rounds of the game.

Today we reviewed arrays. We watch a quick video on arrays and played a dice game. Each student rolled the dice twice and made an array from the numbers.

Today we reviewed three digit numbers. We made a game called Digit Draw. Each partner drew four cards and made the greatest number. We had a lot of fun learning and playing Digit Draw.

Latitude and Longitude

This week we have been discussing latitude and longitude. We uses oranges to represent the Earth. We drew lines of longitude and latitude on our oranges. We also discussed where the Prime Meridian and the Equator are located. We had a lot of fun!

Scientific Method

This week we talked about the scientific method. We conducted an experiment with gummy life savers and water. We put a gummy life saver in water. We made a hypothesis about what would happen. We waited overnight to see the results. We also drew conclusions.

Save Fred

Today we completed a cooperative learning activity called Save Fred. Students were give one gummy life saver,one gummy worm, two paper clips and one plastic cup. Students then had to get the life saver on Fred using only the paper clips. They could not touch Fred with their fingers. If Fred drops to the ground more than once he will drown in the ocean. We had to work together to save Fred.

Fun With Measurement


Today we worked on measuring. We cut string to different lengths and then found things in the room that matched the lengths. We then calculated how much more string we would need to reach one meter.

Catapult Math

Yesterday and today students built catapults in math. Students came up with their own designs. Next students shot marshmallows from their catapults. Students did 5 trials. Last they found the mean . We had one catapult that had a mean of 142! Students had fun making catapults.

Diving at the Titantic

The Titantic sank 100 years ago.  We currently have people who can pay money and dive to see the Titantic.  Some experts say that the Titantic is being destroyed by these divers.  Should people be allowed to continue to dive down and see the Titantic?  Read what we thought after our research.

The Scoop on Sugar






We recently read an article called The Scoop on Sugar from Time For Kids.  The article talked about how much sugar is in products.  The article also discussed whether the government should ban the sale of sugary drinks to kids?  We wrote our opinion on the article.
